About the course
To succeed, Montessori schools need to achieve a level of excellence, stability, and wide-spread public appeal, which makes them highly attractive to prospective parents and teachers. So often, though, schools struggle, primarily because they continue to compromise their programs and principles in hope of becoming more attractive to parents. This course makes the case for courage, conviction, and consistency. The premise is that there is a Montessori way that we can (and must) follow to produce, time and time again, the results that made Montessori schools famous around the world. We will sketch out the specific elements of best practice that can lead your school to greater success in everything it does. The Montessori Foundation has worked with hundreds of Montessori schools around the world, helping them to clarify their philosophy and develop the highest levels of Montessori curriculum and practice. This course will also provide an incredibly in-depth overview of all of the Montessori Foundation’s other courses in Montessori school leadership, along with a host of specific strategies and tools that will help chart the best course for your school’s future. We do not provide a precise syllabus because we customize the course to a large extent to respond to the interests, needs, and concerns of the students enrolled. Topics covered typically include: -Understanding Montessori Education -Why start a Montessori school? -What is a World-Class Montessori School? -Abundance Thinking -The Nine Areas of School Operation -Clarity is the Key to Success -Prioritizing and sequencing what you need to do -A community of support and inspiration. -Legal Structures -Your Business Plan -Ownership and Governance -The Importance of Environment -Facilities -Equipping your classroom(s) -Curriculum design and systems to record student progress and report it to parents -Staffing your school – important principles and ethical issues -Administration/School Leadership -Marketing and Recruiting – Finding the Perfect Match

Course Reviews
Check out what people are saying...
Before enrolling, I had passion but no roadmap. The 12-week course broke everything down into manageable, real-world steps—from crafting a vision and business plan to understanding licensing, budgeting, and staffing. Each week built on the last, and by the end, I wasn’t just dreaming about opening a Montessori school—I had my location, my licensing application ready, and a clear financial plan. The mentorship and feedback from the Montessori Foundation team were invaluable. They shared decades of experience, helped me avoid costly mistakes, and kept me motivated when the process felt overwhelming. Six months later, I opened my doors with a full class and a waiting list for the next year. This course didn’t just teach me how to start a school—it gave me the courage and competence to do it right.
I opened my doors with confidence
When I started the course, I was running a small home-based program and wanted to expand into a full school. I was nervous about the business side—leases, insurance, fundraising—but this course walked me through it all with clarity and warmth. I especially loved the weekly group discussions. Hearing from others at different stages of the journey made me feel supported and inspired. The instructors were generous with their time and wisdom—they truly wanted us to succeed. Today, my school is thriving with multiple classrooms, a strong teaching team, and a close community of families. I can honestly say this course made that possible. It turned what felt like an impossible dream into a sustainable, joyful reality.
The best investment I’ve ever made in myself and my dream
I had been a Montessori teacher for more than a decade but never imagined running my own school until I took this course. The structure was so practical—every module ended with assignments I could immediately apply, like writing a mission statement, identifying start-up costs, and planning a realistic timeline. The section on financial modeling alone was worth the cost of the course; it helped me secure funding and present a solid plan to investors. I also appreciated the emphasis on Montessori authenticity—this wasn’t just about starting any preschool, but about creating a true Montessori community rooted in Dr. Montessori’s principles. Now, as a first-year school head, I find myself returning to my course notes constantly. It’s like having an experienced consultant on my shoulder.
Exactly what I needed to move from vision to reality
